Shoes: Less is More!

Whitin Minimalist Shoes (~$40 on Amazon)

Less is more when you’re running or lifting. Here are my favorite options:
1) Barefoot. Wherever practical, put the shoe on the ground instead of your foot. Run, walk or practice quadrupedal movements in the grass, sand or on a soft synthetic surface like a rubberized track, thick carpet, or firm mat.
2) Minimalist shoes can offer you some needed protection in the gym. I can recommend Whitin, Vibram Five Fingers, Lems, Xero, and Vivobarefoot shoes (links for your convenience! No commissions, just honest opinions). It stands to reason that less shoe should cost less money, so don’t break the bank!
3) “Less is more” also applies to minimalist training itself. If you need to rest your feet, ankle, and calves, consider keeping a conventional pair of shoes handy. Aim for a pair that are:
  • Foot-shaped (wide toe box). Function over fashion—pointed shoes are a 14th century style with crippling consequences.
  • Zero- or low-drop/low-offset (heel and ball equal distance from the ground)
  • Comfortable for your particular use

They’ll provide some cushion but not squeeze your toes together or prevent you from stretching your calf and Achilles tendon. Altra seems to be among the most popular brands in this category.
